Evidence-based global-warming science?

Posted by Henry Bauer on 2014/01/03

Average global temperature has not increased during the last 15 years even as carbon dioxide levels have continued to grow:
Climate Scientist: 73 UN climate models wrong, no global warming in 17 years.

Moreover, Antarctic ice has become thicker when it was supposed to be thawing:
Global warming ‘pause’ may last for 20 more years and Arctic sea ice has already started to recover.

But of course all this has not shaken the faith in human-caused global warming — or at least it has not shaken the determination of science-bureaucrats, whose careers are vested in global-warming dogma, to try to convince us that 2 plus 2 (bits of carbon dioxide) equals 5 (degrees):
As its global warming narrative unravels, the IPCC is in damage control mode.

The following commentary makes delightful reading:
Global warming expedition to prove Antarctic ice is melting trapped by ice.

The attempts to rescue people on that ice-bound expeditionary ship, by ice breakers from Australia and China and the USA and ultimately helicopters from the Chinese vessel, have featured prominently on network and cable news. Strangely enough, I have not seen it pointed out in those “news” programs that the need to rescue flies in the face of global-warming dogma.

But then, “news” programs are not much given to enlightening the audience with context or even facts. TV “news” aims to attract as large an audience as possible by offering what the producers think will entertain — as acknowledged in the fine HBO series, “Newsroom”.

  1. Expecting real news from the U.S. main stream media is not being realistic. The 2011 paper in PLoS One about Global Corporate Control clarifies that our main stream media are a single conglomerate owned and run by our corporate masters. To understand the world around us, these details seem vital to me.

One illustration of the MSM fact is that it has completely ignored the World Bank whistleblower, Karen Hudes. Google finds many stories about her in other media. She also has her own website at KAHudes.net and can be found and friended on Facebook.

If you wish to supplant worries about human caused global warming, just find out about the proposed fascist takeover of many countries, including our own by the TPP, Trans-Pacific Partnership. It would establish a corporate run court system with the power to override any national laws that obstruct maximum profits for the corporations. Now is the time to start organizing to prevent the Senate from approving this horrific “trade treaty”.

I have been hearing contradictory reports about this issue. On the one hand, the IPCC reports that we have not had any global warming in the past 15 years or so. On the other hand, we get news stories like this over here in Australia:

    http://mobile.abc.net.au/news/2014-01-03/2013-was-the-hottest-year-on-record-for-australia/5183040

Some pertinent excerpts from that story:

“It’s not just us at the bureau doing the number crunching, it is all the bureaus around the world, and it is that body of evidence that we’re all seeing a warming over Australia and a warming world.”

“According to the bureau, the planet’s oceans are also getting warmer, with sea surface temperatures over the past 10 years the warmest on record.”

“In an analysis of the BoM Annual Climate Statement written for the The Conversation website, bureau experts said that 2013 was the 6th hottest year on record globally, while 13 of the 14 hottest years on record have occurred since 2001.”

I am the last person to appeal to authority, but when authorities present contradictory statements, I am understandably confused.

What would you make of that story? Something is NQR (not quite right). Help!

Suspect “settled science,” support open minds.

  4. At SkeptiCal in Oakland, one speaker spoke convincingly to the effect that the warming was real and continuing. But he only showed the last 8000 centuries. Wasn’t there a time (before that?) when CO2 levels were much higher? Presumably that made the oceans more acid. Do we have any clue what that did to sea life at that time?

Still, the “97% of climate scientists agree” seems to have been in a not completely representative group.

8000 centuries?? 800,000 years? There have been 7 or 8 major ice ages and warm periods during that time, over a range of 5 or 6 degrees centigrade.

      • But were there much higher levels of CO2 in those warm periods? And were the oceans more acidic? And can we tell how terrible that was for all things living in the oceans?

        nitpicker077:
I’m not sure that there is reliable data on CO2 that far back. However, in recent times several studies have shown CO2 increase lagging behind temperature increase.
Michael Crichton’s “State of Fear” is a novel with graphs and citations to scientific publications that demonstrate lack of correlation between temperatures and CO2 as well as mutually conflicting data from various temperature-measuring sites.
I don’t know about ocean acidity and sea life.
